As one of Indonesia's largest private bank, Bank Central Asia (BCA) served millions of customers. However, their mobile banking platform—descrospite its widespread use—had fallen behind contemporary digital standards with outdated interface and user experience.
This project represented more than just a visual update—it was an opportunity to reshape how millions of Indonesians interact with their financial services daily, setting new standards for digital banking in Southeast Asia.
MyBCA Mobile App
The primary predominantly middle-aged individuals who were accustomed to its existing, traditional interface. Additionally, BCA's stringent security protocols and complex structure created significant constraints for innovation.
In the end, BCA decided to create a new app called MyBCA while keeping the BCA m-Banking intact for its current users who resist change, while adding up features that has been bucket-listed by millions of younger user base.
My usual design process, that also aligns with how IceHouse handled things, was to analyse the requirements first, then identify if there are similar solutions around. This is important because we need to use the same mental models that have been implemented before so users don't have to spend time readapting.
Other than following the requirements, I would also independently analyse the existing design (if it is a redesign project). It is to avoid any missable details that can be tackled early on.
From there, before going to anything visual, I will create userflows / information architecture to ensure time efficiency since graphs are much more easier to iterate with.
Since this is an entire redesign and entire new architecture, I will not show all of the updates. Instead, I will highlight the major changes that are significantly improving how existing users do financial transactions within BCA mobile app.
Note: Some of the screens have been independently translated by me to give context for audiences outside Indonesia.
This was a project done in 2018, therefore a lot of things have changed since then. Even the 'old' BCA m-Banking one has implemented a lot of improvements that made their financial transactions even more easier.
Even some of the newer MyBCA features makes me think "Why didn't I think of doing that back then?" *chuckles
Nevertheless, looking at some screens that are unchanged made me really happy. It reminds me of the days where I was being forced to be an early-riser to go back and forth to BCA office with my teammates and funny banter with the POs.
